Kosovar students eager to discover more about the ICTY

Gnjilane/Gjilan, 7 November 2014

Students from “Zenel Hajdini” Gymnasium in Gnjilane/Gjilan, Kosovo, today attended a presentation on the ICTY’s work and achievements delivered by Tribunal representative Driton Gashi. The presentation was attended by 22 students, all of whom stated that prior to the presentation, they had had little opportunity to learn about the ICTY.

In the first part of the presentation, Driton spoke about the history of the ICTY, why it had been established and briefly explained the Tribunal’s mandate. Students were also provided with some basic statistics about the Tribunal’s work during the past two decades, including the number of persons who have been indicted and convicted by the Tribunal and the total number of witnesses who testified in The Hague. The focus then turned to trials directly related to Kosovo, especially the Đorđević, Šainović et al, Haradinaj et al. and Limaj et al. cases. The students were also shown selected footage from three testimonies given by witnesses who have appeared before the Tribunal in Kosovo-related trials. The final part of the presentation provided an overview of the contributions the ICTY has made to international criminal law and transitional justice in the region.

The presentation was followed by a question and answer session, during which students were particularly keen to learn more about the trial of Slobodan Milošević, as well as about various aspects of other Kosovo-related cases.

At the conclusion of the event, students were provided with ICTY information material and encouraged to visit the Tribunal’s website and social media channels. This series of ICTY Outreach high school presentations in Kosovo will continue later this month.
