The Hague, 5 July 1995
CC/PIO/010-E

The International Tribunal announces "with a lot of sadness"
the return to his home country of its Chief of investigations.

Mr. Alastair Milroy, the Chief of Investigations of the International Tribunal’s Office of the Prosecutor, will return to Australia, his home country, on 19 August 1995, at the expiration of his contract period.

Mr. Milroy took up his position in The Hague one year ago after obtaining a 12-month leave of absence from the New South Wales Police Department. Unfortunately, this leave could not be extended: Al Milroy’s services are required back in Sydney.

The International Tribunal regards Mr. Milroy's departure "with a lot of sadness". Justice Goldstone, ICTY's Prosecutor, said that Al Milroy’s departure was "a big loss: his professional competence and experience have been indispensable in establishing the Tribunal and setting its compass in unchartered waters." Mr. Graham Blewitt, Deputy Prosecutor, expressed his "great regret", explaining that "Al Milroy has been a tower of strength. He is a valuable asset to any law enforcement agency and it is not hard to understand why his own Police Force wants him back. But we will miss him."

Nevertheless, the continuity of investigations will not be prejudiced: the search for a replacement has begun and arrangements will be in place if this process is not completed at the time of Mr. Milroy's departure.
