Former senior Italian prosecutors to reinforce Tribunal staff

Resuming his series of meetings at the highest level in Europe, the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Judge Antonio Cassese, travelled to Rome on Wednesday 13 March 1996.

Judge Cassese met with the President of the Republic, Mr. Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, the Minister of Justice, Mr. Vincenzo Caianiello, and the Minister of Defence, Mr. Domenico Corcione.

During his meeting with the Head of State, President Cassese was assured of Italy's unqualified support for the work of justice the International Tribunal had undertaken.

Also the Minister of Justice conveyed to President Cassese assurances that he could count on the support of the Italian judicial authorities. The Minister announced that he had decided to second to the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICTY four senior prosecutors for periods ranging from six months to two years.

In addition the Minister of Justice stated that by 22 March he intended to propose to the Council of Ministers that persons convicted by the Tribunal at The Hague could serve their sentences in a prison of the Italian Republic. More specifically, Mr. Caianiello said that he planned to suggest that over the next three years, Italy commit itself to receiving a maximum of ten convicted persons.

The Minister of Defence confirmed to President Cassese that Italy, in accordance with what had been planned and agreed within NATO, supported the Tribunal's work.

In addition, Mr Corcione stated that the Tribunal was prepared to second a few military prosecutors to work in the Office of the Prosecutor.
