Kovacevic case: no date to be set next week for the initial appearance.

No date for the initial appearance of Milan Kovacevic will be set before the week beginning the 28 July 1997 at the earliest, pending the outcome of various medical tests.

This process, which is ongoing, includes an assessment of the state of health of the accused by two Dutch medical experts.

At the request of Mr. Igor Pantelic, the Defence Counsel who has been temporarily assigned to Milan Kovacevic, the Registry of the International Tribunal has also authorized three medical experts from Belgrade to visit and to examine the accused.

Background on the initial appearance.

Under Rule 62 of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence, the Accused is asked during the initial appearance hearing to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty on each of the counts in the Indictment against him.

Milan Kovacevic was charged along with Simo Drljaca on 13 March 1997 with "complicity in the commission of genocide".
