President Pocar addresses meeting of legal advisers of UN Member States

On Monday afternoon, President Pocar addressed a meeting of the legal advisers of the UN Member States in New York.

The President stressed the importance of the support of member States in relation to the legacy of the ad hoc Tribunals, in order for the Tribunal's contribution to the societies of the former Yugoslavia to be maximized and preserved.

Since some of the Tribunal's functions will have to continue beyond the conclusion of trials and appeals, the position of the Tribunal in this respect, as outlined in its Joint Paper with the ICTR on the Residual Functions of the ad hoc Tribunals, is to posit radically downsized Tribunals as a desirable residual mechanism.

President Pocar also briefed the legal advisers on the latest developments of the jurisprudence of the ICTY and addressed the issue of the current proliferation of international jurisdictions.

The meeting was also attended by Presidents of other international Tribunals.
