Nikola Šainović Granted Provisional Release

Nikola Šainović has been granted temporary provisional release to Serbia on compassionate grounds from today, 2 October 2008 upto 17 October 2008. Šainović’s release is subject to a number of specific conditions, including 24-hour surveillance by Serbian authorities.

Another co-accused in this case Vladimir Lazarević was also granted provisional release from 2 October to 27 October 2008 but this decision was stayed after the Office of the Prosecutor filed an appeal. Applications for provisional release by Nebojša Pavković and Sreten Lukić were denied.

Šainović, Lazarević, Pavković and Lukić are on trial together with Milan Milutinović and Dragoljub Ojdanić for an alleged campaign of terror and violence directed against Kosovo Albanians and other non-Serbs living in Kosovo in 1999. All have been charged with deportation, forcible transfer, murder and persecutions of thousands of Kosovo Albanians and other non-Serbs.

The trial commenced on 10 July 2006 with closing arguments concluded 27 August 2008.
