Office of the Prosecutor:
Olga Kavran, Spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor, made the following statement:
We can confirm that Serbian authorities have informed us that Stojan Župljanin was arrested today. The Prosecutor’s office welcomes this development and the fact that this now brings the number of fugitives from four to three. It also confirms what the Prosecutor has been saying for some time now that the remaining fugitives are within the reach of Serbia. We hope, of course, that Župljanin will be in The Hague shortly and that he will soon be followed by the remaining three fugitives – Radovan Karadžić, Ratko Mladić and Goran Hadžić.
Questions:
A journalist asked whether Kavran had any information about the specific circumstances of the arrest who answered that she did not. She hoped that she would have some more information later this afternoon. For now all she could confirm was that he was arrested somewhere in Serbia.
Asked to comment on the fact that after being on the run for so many years, Župljanin was apparently arrested near Belgrade, indicating that he had been within reach of the Serbian authorities, Kavran responded that there had been an earlier attempt to arrest him which the Prosecutor had commented on. That attempt was not successful but it was seen by the Prosecutor as a genuine attempt conducted under the supervision of the Serbian war crimes prosecutor at that time. Kavran reiterated that she still did not have the details of arrest.
