Asset Disposal Unit

The ICTY Asset Disposal Unit (ADU) was established in 2005 to dispose of all redundant or “written-off” items, such as IT equipment and vehicles. Most items are donated to charitable organisations, mainly in the former Yugoslavia.

Since the first donation of a minibus to an orphanage in Kosovo in 2005, more than 50 separate donations have been made. The main beneficiaries have been charitable organisations such as women and youth associations, orphanages, schools, sports clubs and volunteer fire brigades.

In April 2006, a shipment of more than 300 used computers were donated to schools, youth centres and non-governmental organisations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This donation was carried out in conjunction with the AidNet foundation, a Sarajevo-based humanitarian organisation and with the generous support of Voerman International moving company, that provided free transportation from The Hague to Sarajevo.

The Tribunal produced a video for this occasion, tracking the donation from The Hague to Bosnia and Herzegovina and its impact on the beneficiaries.

In the summer of 2007 a similar large donation of computers was sent to Kosovo‘s Ministry of Education being the beneficiary. This donation consisted of 270 computers, 46 laptops, 12 servers, 18 printers and other electrical equipment.

The International Asset Disposal Unit

In 2007 the ICTY ADU joined forces with other international organisations in The Hague (OPCW, OSCE High Commission on National Minorities, ICC, ICJ and Eurojust) to set up an International Asset Disposal Unit (IADU).

In 2010, the IADU donated 75 computers and monitors, together with multiple printers and switches, to four elementary and primary schools in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In October 2010, 30 monitors were given to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Zagreb, Croatia for further distribution to beneficiaries in the region of the former Yugoslavia.

In 2009, the IADU, in cooperation with the Dutch-Argentine Solidarity Foundation, donated 48 computer sets and 12 printers to remote communities in Argentina. These goods were transported by sea to Argentina, on a frigate of the Argentine Navy.

Other beneficiaries of recent IADU donations include the Change4Africa Foundation and the Bethsaida Centre for Health and Development in Musona, Tanzania.
