ICTY Weekly Press Briefing

Date: 28.03.2007

Time: 12:00

Registry and Chambers:

Refik Hodžić, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

As was announced in the latest press release, Blagoje Simić was transferred yesterday to the United Kingdom to serve his sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment. Blagoje Simić, a former Bosnian Serb politician in the Bosanski Šamac municipality, was convicted for aiding and abetting persecution in the form of the unlawful arrests and detention of non-Serb civilians, confinement of non-Serb prisoners in inhumane conditions, forced labour by Bosnian Croats and Bosnian Muslims, and forced displacement of non-Serb civilians in the municipality of Bosanski Šamac between 17 April 1992 and 31 December 1993.

SCHEDULE:

As I mentioned at the last briefing, an Appeals Chamber judgement will be rendered in the case against Miroslav Bralo on Monday, 2 April at 15:00 in courtroom I. Miroslav Bralo, former member of the HVO Military Police Battalion known as the “Jokers”, pleaded guilty to war crimes committed in and around the central Bosnian villages of Ahmići and Nadioci. He was sentenced by the Trial Chamber to 20 years’ imprisonment for his role in the multiple murder, rape, torture, unlawful confinement and inhumane treatment of Bosnian Muslim civilians, including a number of children, between January and mid-July 1993.

On Tuesday 3 April, the Appeals Chamber will render its judgement in the Radoslav Brđanin case at 14:00 in courtroom I. The Trial Chamber found Brđanin, a former senior Bosnian Serb politician, guilty of crimes committed against non-Serbs in the Serb-held Autonomous Region of Krajina (ARK) between May and December of 1992, including willful killing, torture, deportation and wanton destruction of cities, towns or villages and sentenced to 32 years’ imprisonment.

Both Appeals Chamber judgements next week will be broadcast live.

Also next week in courtroom I, there will be two status conferences, on Tuesday at 9:00 in the Gotovina et al. case, and on Wednesday, also at 9:00, in the Šešelj case. A status conference in the Hadžihasanović & Kubura case has been scheduled for Wednesday at 8:00 in courtroom II and on Thursday, in courtroom III, again at 8:00, there will be a status conference in the Krajišnik case.

The trial against Boškoski and Tarčulovski will begin in the third week of April in courtroom I. This will be preceded by a pre-trial conference on Thursday 12 April at 9:00 in courtroom III.

The trials in the Haradinaj et al., Milošević, Popović et al. and Prlić et al. cases will continue this and next week. Please check the schedule on our website for last minute changes.

I would also like to remind you that next Friday, 6 April, and the following Monday, 9 April, the Tribunal will be closed for the Easter holiday.

OUTREACH:

A training seminar in international humanitarian law for Macedonian judges and prosecutors is to begin tomorrow in Skopje. The seminar marks the start of a program designed to improve the capacity of Macedonian judiciary to conduct war crimes prosecutions and trials according to international standards. The program envisages a series of educational events, including training seminars and study visits to the ICTY. It is organised by the Ministry of Justice of Republic of Macedonia, in cooperation with the OSCE, the US Department of Justice, and the ICTY. The Tribunal is proud to support and contribute to efforts like this, which aim to build the capacity of domestic judiciaries in the ex-Yugoslavia. The Tribunal has engaged in similar activities in other countries of the former Yugoslavia and assisted in the establishment of institutions which are today fully capable of handling war crimes trials.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Olga Kavran, Spokesperson for the Prosecutor made the following statement:

As I am sure you have seen in the press release they issued yesterday, Human Rights Watch sent a letter to Commissioner Olli Rehn, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Mr. Javier Solana, asking them to ensure that the European Union maintains a principled and consistent approach towards Serbia and insists on full cooperation with the ICTY as a precondition for resuming negotiations on a Stabilization and Association Agreement, the first step toward EU membership.

Some media have asked for the Prosecutor’s comment, so I will take this opportunity to repeat her comments here:

Human Rights Watch is one of the most prominent and respected international non-governmental organisations operating in the world today and their statements and positions carry great weight.

We can only hope that the recipients of the letter, that is - the European Union, will fully address the very serious concerns so forcefully expressed by Human Rights Watch.

As you know, these are the same concerns repeatedly expressed by the Prosecutor and all those who support international justice.
