ICTY Weekly Press Briefing - 27 February 2013

Date: 27.02.2013
Time: 12:00

Registry and Chambers:

Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good morning,

Turning straight to the activities in the courtrooms:

The Appeal Judgement in the case of Momčilo Perišić will be rendered tomorrow afternoon at 15:00 in Courtroom I. Journalists wishing to cover the delivery of the judgement must submit an accreditation request by email to the Media Office by the end of today. Journalists will be informed via email of the procedure for collection of their accreditation tickets.

Hearings in the trials of Radovan Karadžić and Ratko Mladić continue this week as scheduled.

In the case of Ratko Mladić, protected witness RM-513 is testifying in closed session. He is the 79th witness to be called by the Prosecution.

As announced by the Trial Chamber during the hearing of 28 January, Mladić’s trial will adjourn on Friday until Monday, 8 April 2013. This is in response to a request by the Defence.

In the case of Radovan Karadžić, the Trial Chamber is currently hearing the testimony of Milovan Lelek, former Republika Srpska Army officer in Rogatica. He is the 86th witness to be called by the Defence.

Proceedings in the case of Goran Hadžić will resume on Monday, 4 March at 9:00 in Courtroom III.

Before concluding, I would like to highlight the visit of eight young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Kosovo which the Tribunal is hosting this week. The visit is organised by the Tribunal’s Outreach Programme in cooperation with the Belgrade-based Youth Initiative for Human Rights. The group will be meeting with senior staff members from the Tribunal’s three organs and attending hearings. This visit forms part of Outreach’s efforts to engage directly with the youth from across the former Yugoslavia and to encourage them to take an active interest in the Tribunal’s work and achievements.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Frederick Swinnen, Special Advisor to the Prosecutor, made the following statement:

This is my last press briefing in my capacity as Special Advisor to the Prosecutor. I will be leaving the Tribunal tomorrow and will, as of this Friday, be working for the UN in Jerusalem.

Mr Aleksandar Kontić will be in charge of media relations as of then and Ms Ljiljana Pitesa will also remain available.

My successor will be appointed in the next few weeks.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the comprehensive coverage of our work and the excellent cooperation we have had. It has been a real pleasure to work with you over the past years on some extremely challenging matters.

As I became in charge of, in addition to my other functions, our office’s media relations, I realised the importance of this aspect of the work of the Tribunal. As journalists, you play a significant role in informing the public, in particular in the former Yugoslavia, about the Tribunal’s work and achievements.

I wish you success with your important work.

I also wish to thank the media office for organising the briefings every week.

Questions:

A journalist wished Swinnen all the best and thanked him for his cooperation.
