  ICTY WEEKLY PRESS BRIEFING Latest
Developments

Please note that this
is not a verbatim transcript of the Press
Briefing. It is merely a summary.

Date: 14.09.2005

Time: 12.15

Office of the Prosecutor:

Florence Hartmann, Spokesperson for
the Office of the Prosecutor, made the
following statement:

The OTP has been informed by the
authorities of of RS in Bosnia and Herzegovina
and the authorities of Serbia that Sredoje
Lukic who was hiding in Russia has traveled
back and surrendered. We were informed
that Srdoje Lukic should be transferred
from Banja Luka to the DU in The Hague
in the coming days.

We expect Dragan Zelenovic, who
was arrested in Russia at the end of
August, to be transferred soon. Vlastimir
Djordjevic, indicted for crimes committed
in Kosovo, is still believed to be hiding
in Russia. His transfer is urgent as
his trial could start next year with
other indictees.

Ms Del Ponte will be visiting Serbia,
Montenegro and Croatia on September 29
and 30th. The full details of her visit
to Belgrade, Zagreb and Podgorica will
be provided to the media in due course.

Ms Del Ponte has taken note of the
recent statements by the US, the EU and
NATO leadership on Karadzic and Mladic.
The chief Prosecutor welcomes their calls
for the two men indicted for genocide
to be in custody before the 10th Anniversary
of the Dayton Peace Agreement. The tenth
anniversary of Dayton, on 21 November,
or of its signature in Paris on 14 December,
are important symbolic deadlines. Another
key deadline is 5 October, the fifth
anniversary of Milosevic’s fall.
The Prosecutor expects that Serbia will
live up to its promises given to her
during her last visit in Belgrade and
deliver Mladic before that date.

All these calls are important as
they recall our duties toward the victims
and towards the law. These words are
necessary, but useless if concrete actions
are not taken at the same time in order
to bring result. We should not forget
that for the victims each new delay cause
new wounds. We should also not forget
that if Karadzic and Mladic are not arrested
before the end of the year, the delay
will invalidate the Completion Strategy.

November 21, December 14, July 11
or October 5 are not just dates. They
create a hope that justice will finally
be brought to the victims. Such high
expectations must be matched by the corresponding
means and resources to truly meet them.
Otherwise, it only generates frustration
and mistrust. The victims of genocide
don’t deserve that.
