Press Briefing

REGISTRY AND CHAMBERS
Jim Landale, the ICTY Spokesman, began todays briefing by making the following
announcements:
The Prosecutor,
Justice Louise Arbour, is planning to return from Skopje today. She will be
putting out a written press statement later today and will give a press conference
tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Tribunal, which the media is invited to attend.
There will be
a further initial appearance in the Bosanski Samac case tomorrow, 21 January
at 3 p.m. for Stevan Todorovic. This follows the confirmation of a second amended
indictment against Blagoje Simic, Milan Simic, Miroslav Tadic, Simo Zaric and
Stevan Todorovic. Also in this case, two of the accused, namely Simo Zaric and
Miroslav Tadic, have filed motions for provisional release. Both motions were
filed on 18 January and copies are available upon request.
In the Radic &
Othes case (Omarska and Keraterm), the defence Counsel for Mladjo Radic filed
on 14 January a Defence preliminary motion "challenging the jurisdiction
of the Tribunal and pointing to the defects in the form of the indictment".
Finally, in the
Celebici case, Hazim Delics counsels filed on 15 January a motion for
extension of time to file his appellate brief. Delics lawyers request
that "his deadline for filing his appellate brief be extended until
the date set for Mucic". Mucic filed on 28 December 1998 a request
for the time of filing appellate documents be extended to 31 August 1999. The
Appeals Chamber has not ruled yet.
QUESTIONS:
Asked whether
the Finnish President would give a press conference tomorrow, Landale replied
that there would be a photo opportunity and that arrangements for a press
pool were being made, but that there would be no press conference.
Asked what
kind of travel documents were used by the Prosecutor and the investigators
at the border, Landale replied that he would prefer to wait to allow the Prosecutor
to answer questions on her trip at the press conference tomorrow.
Asked if Hillary
Clinton was planning to visit the Tribunal during her stay in the Netherlands
in February, Landale replied that he would look into it.
There were no
further questions.
