Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following
statement
Good afternoon,
First, with regard to comments as reflected in the media from
members of the Serbian delegation who met with President Meron here
in The Hague on Monday, President Meron wishes to make it abundantly
clear that he reminded the delegation that Serbia must live up to
its international obligations fully and unconditionally.
Referring to his recent reports to the United Nations Security
Council and the Council of Europe, President Meron pointed to the
continuing non-cooperation between Belgrade and the ICTY. He asked
that the Belgrade authorities resume active cooperation with the
Prosecutor without further delay and stated that that cooperation
must be full.
As I announced last week, a group of Judges and Prosecutors from
the Special Court for War Crimes (SCWC) in Belgrade, is visiting
the Tribunal this week. This study tour, which has been organized
at their request and sponsored by the UNDP in Serbia and Montenegro,
is aimed at building the channels of communication between the SCWC
and the ICTY and thus facilitating the transfer of knowledge and
experience accumulated through the practice of the ICTY to the domestic
courts and judiciary. In addition to the numerous discussions between
ICTY representatives and our guests, Tribunal Judges and Prosecutors
have been invited to participate in roundtables with their counterparts
from Serbia and Montenegro.
I’m also very pleased to welcome here today Sonja Prostran, the
Secretary of the Belgrade District Court, and Bruno Vekaric, the
Spokesperson of the Office of the Prosecutor of the Special Court.
Both Sonja and Bruno have agreed to introduce themselves and answer
your questions here immediately after the ADC briefing.
The Tribunal is also hosting a visit from the Committee for Human
Rights, Immigration, Refugees and Asylum of the Bosnia and Herzegovina
(BH) Parliamentary Assembly, who will be here until the end of the
week. As I mentioned last week, the parliamentarians will hear about
the work of the Tribunal and how the BH Parliament Assembly can
help.
In terms of the court schedule:
With regard to the Appeals Hearing in The Prosecutor v. Kordic
and Cerkez which is due to take place from 17 to 19 May 2004
(and 20 May if necessary), we have received a detailed Scheduling
Order, copies of which will be available on request after this.
There will be a status conference in The Prosecutor v. Milutinovic,
Ojdanic and Sainovic this afternoon at 2.30 p.m. in Courtroom
I.
There will be a status conference in The Prosecutor v. Dragan
Nikolic before the Pre-Appeal Judge, Judge Guney, at 2.30 p.m.
on Friday 14 May in Courtroom II.
In the case concerning allegations against Milka Maglov, Trial
Chamber II has ordered that the proceedings will resume on 24 May
at 2.15 p.m. in Courtroom III and that the Defence will be given
a maximum of three trial days to present its case.
Finally, I understand that the ADC will give a briefing after this.
