The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, will visit the Tribunal tomorrow. In a short visit, which will be part of his tour of international judicial institutions in The Hague, Secretary General will meet the President Pocar and the Prosecutor Del Ponte. There may be a brief press opportunity at the end of his visit, but we are still waiting for the confirmation of this from the Secretary General’s office. For further information, please contact our office later this afternoon.

The conference will take place on 8 and 9 February and is organized by three documentation centers from Zagreb, Belgrade and Sarajevo.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Anton Nikiforov, Advisor to the Prosecutor, made no statement. He repeated that Carla Del Ponte was in Brussels today and met with Javier Solana, EU High Representative and Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union. The meeting with Olli Rehn was cancelled due to his travel to Finland.

Questions:

Asked what the outcome of Prosecutor’s meeting with Javier Solana was, Nikiforov replied that the Prosecutor expressed her gratitude for the support of the European Union and European Commission and stressed again the success of the policy of conditionality of European Union.

She called on the new Serbian government, once it is formed, to fulfill its obligation towards the Tribunal in full, including the arrest of the remaining fugitives. Solana reacted positively to the Prosecutor’s requests and reassured that he will be soon going to Belgrade and will deliver the message from the Prosecutor. The Prosecutor also stressed that she is still counting on the full support from the European Union in terms of conditionality in regard to the States who are supposed to fulfill their international obligations towards the Tribunal.

A journalist asked whether the Prosecutor has been in contact with the Dutch authorities on their support with the Prosecutor’s vision Anton replied that Carla Del Ponte met recently with the Dutch Foreign Minister Bot who stated that the Dutch government is fully supportive of the ICTY.

Asked whether we are aware of Domagoj Margetić health condition, Hodžić answered that we are aware of media reports about his health. However, as mentioned before, we expect him to be present at the judgement hearing. He added that no report has been received by the Trial Chamber in relation to his health condition.
