ICTY Weekly Press Briefing
Date: 22.11.2006
Time: 12:00
Registry and Chambers:
Refik Hodžić, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:
I would like to begin the briefing with news just in from the Appeals Chamber: Today, it issued a confidential decision denying in its entirety the Prosecution's motion for review of the appeals judgement in the case of Tihomir Blaškić. As the decision is confidential due to witness protection-related issues, I do not have any more details for you at present, but a public redacted version of the decision will be published in the next day or two.
SCHEDULE:
Moving on to the schedule, we can look forward to a very busy few days in our courtrooms.
Next week, the Appeals Chamber will render its judgement for Bosnian Serb politician Blagoje Simić, on Tuesday, 28 November 2006 at 9:00 in courtroom I. Simić was convicted and sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment by the Trial Chamber, which found that he was at the top of the joint criminal enterprise whose aim was to persecute non-Serb civilians in Bosanski Šamac in 1992 and 1993.
The Appeals Chamber will also render its judgment in the Stanislav Galić case on Thursday, 30 November in courtroom I. As former commander of the Sarajevo Romanija Corps of the Army of Republika Srpska, Galić was sentenced by the Trial Chamber to 20 years’ imprisonment for conducting a campaign of sniping and shelling intended primarily to terrorise the civilian population of Sarajevo from 1992 until 1994.
A status conference will be held for Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović on Wednesday 29 November at 10:30 in courtroom II. The accused are on provisional release and have waived their right to be present.
On Thursday 30 November, a trial will start for Domagoj Margetić charged with contempt of the Tribunal.
Tomorrow, a status conference will be held for Dragan Zelenović at 10:00 in courtroom I and on Friday a status conference will be held in the Milorad Trbić case at 8:00 in courtroom III.
The proceedings in the Milutinović et al., Mrkšić et al., Popović et al. and Prlić et al. cases will continue this and next week. To see the latest changes in the courtroom schedule, please check the Tribunal’s website.
FILINGS:
As it was noted during today’s Status Conference in the case of Vojislav Šešelj, Registry on Monday informed Šešelj of the facilities it is able to provide him for preparation of his defence, as requested by the Trial Chamber during the previous status conference. Registry responded to Šešelj’s requests for additional space in the DU, the request to have his associates assisting him with preparation of his defence recognized by the Tribunal as his legal advisors, privileged access to his associates, issues concerning translation of documents submitted and received by Šešelj, trial management procedures including E-court system and the facilities to enable Šešelj to review audio and video material.
At the request of the Appeals Chamber, the Government of the Republic of Croatia has filed its response on Monday 20 November to the "Prosecution’s Motion On 1 November 2006 To Strike Request For Review Under Rule 108bis."
Outreach:
The ICTY is pleased to announce the launch today of a seven-minute video of the Detention Unit on its website. The video, with English commentary (other languages to follow in due course), shows scenes from the detention facility, including a detainee’s room, the detainees’ common area, the lawyers’ meeting room, medical facilities, weight room and gym, the library, spiritual room and the educational and occupational therapy facilities.
The video is an addition to the Detention Unit page on the ICTY website which has also recently added a photo gallery of the detention facility. These photographs are, like the video, available for download copyright-free.
