Judge Fausto Pocar sworn in Today

Today, 8 February 2000, Judge Fausto Pocar (Italy) was sworn in as a Judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).

Judge Pocar was appointed to replace Judge Antonio Cassese and will serve the remainder of Judge Cassese’s term of office until 16 November 2001.

Following Judge Cassese’s departure, Judge David Hunt (Australia) has been elected Presiding Judge of Trial Chamber II.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Professor of International Law at the University of Milan (Italy), Mr. Fausto Pocar (born 21 February 1939) has also been constantly involved in United Nations activities.

Elected in 1984 as a member of the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations, he was its Chairman in 1991 and 1992. In 1993, he took part in the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna. Professor Pocar also conducted various missions for the High Commissioner for Human Rights (among others in Chechnya in 1995 and in Russia in 1996).

He served several times as a member of the Italian delegation to the General Assembly in New York and to the Commission on Human Rights in Geneva. Professor Pocar was also a member of the United Nations Committee on the peaceful uses of outer space.

Professor Pocar is familiar with The Hague: he taught at The Hague Academy of International Law and participated, during the past twenty years, in The Hague Conference on Private International Law.

Author of numerous legal publications, Professor Pocar is a member of various associations, such as the Institut de droit international and the International Law Association.
