LORD BONOMY SWORN IN AS A JUDGE OF THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA (ICTY)

Today, 7 June 2004, Lord Bonomy (United Kingdom) was sworn in as a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia after his appointment by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, effective from 1 June 2004.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Lord Bonomy was born in 1946. He was educated in Scotland, graduating from Glasgow University. He practiced as a solicitor from 1970 until 1983. In 1984 he was admitted to the Scottish Bar and in 1993 was appointed Queen’s Counsel. From 1990 to 1996 he served as a criminal prosecutor (Advocate Depute and Home Advocate Depute). He was appointed as a Judge in the Scottish Supreme
Courts in 1997.

In 2002, he produced a report on the state of Scotland’s High Court, making several recommendations for reforms which are now awaiting Parliamentary approval.

Following his installation, Lord Bonomy paid tribute to the distinguished contribution to the work of the Tribunal made by his predecessor, Judge Richard May, who has regrettably been unable to complete his term of office here through illness.
