LORD BONOMY APPOINTED AS JUDGE TO THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIBUNAL FOR THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA


On Monday, 12 April 2004, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Kofi Annan, signed an order appointing Lord Bonomy as a Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Lord Bonomy, whose appointment is effective as of 1 June 2004, replaces Judge Richard May who is retiring due to ill-health (see Press Release 824).


BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE




Lord Bonomy was born in 1946. He was educated in Scotland, graduating from Glasgow University. He practiced as a solicitor from 1970 until 1983. In 1984 he was admitted to the Scottish Bar and in 1993 was appointed Queen’s Counsel. From 1990 to 1996 he served as a criminal prosecutor (Advocate Depute and Home Advocate Depute). He was appointed as a Judge in 1997.




In 2002 he produced a report on the state of Scotland’s High Court, making several recommendations for reforms which are now awaiting Parliamentary approval.
