Office of the Prosecutor:
Anton Nikiforov, Senior Political Advisor for the Office of the Prosecutor, made no statement.
Questions:
Asked if the address Đorđević gave at his initial appearance was from before he went into hiding, Hodžić said that according to the transcripts the Judge asked Đorđević where he resided at the time of his arrest to which Đorđević replied Belgrade, Batallion 39. There was no further discussion on what this meant in terms of his arrest, Hodžić said.
Nikiforov added that the prosecution was very interested in more details of when and how he returned back from Russia and how he obtained passports and Serbian false documents in the name Novica Karadžić born in Kosovo.
Asked if the OTP maintained that Đorđević was in Russia, Nikiforov said that they continued to believe that he had been in Russia but that it was not clear when he returned. Nikiforov said that they had not yet had an opportunity to speak with him.
Asked if there was any information from the Montenegrin police on the circumstances of his arrest, Nikiforov answered that they had not yet received full information.
Asked if the Prosecutor was surprised that he was arrested in Montenegro, Nikiforov stated that they were working on specific information and that he could not go into details because it could affect other cases. He added that the OTP had been working on it for some time.
Asked if once the information was obtained would it be made public, Nikiforov answered yes it could be considered when and if it was clear.
A journalist asked if these "other cases" were the cases of the four remaining fugitives. Nikiforov replied that yes, and added that actually the prosecution was satisfied with the co-operation put in place on a regional level. The prosecution established a specific framework of cooperation on the regional level between particular services and police forces. Nikiforov added that the OTP participated in this coordinated effort through regular contact and meetings. The two latest successful arrests were a result of this initiative to establish regional cooperation, which proved to be working well. It was done effectively, quickly and successfully.
Asked if this was set up last week during the Prosecutor’s visit to Belgrade, Nikiforov said no that it was a result of more than a year’s effort. He said what was actually crucial to establish was cooperation with the Republic of Srpska, Montenegro and Serbia working together on all issues and it was the most important thing to establish. Nikiforov said that this was the real basis for any future success and that he could not go into further details.
