Olga Kavran, Spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor, made the following statement:


Last week, the Prosecutor conducted a working visit to the region of the former Yugoslavia, namely Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.


On Monday, 9 July, she was in Podgorica where she met with President Filip Vujanovic, Prime Minister Zeljko Sturanovic as well as with the heads of the National Security Agency, Dusko Markovic and the Police Directorate, Veselin Veljovic. They discussed the importance of the national war crimes prosecutions and further efforts to locate and arrest remaining fugitives.


The Prosecutor then travelled to Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically Sarajevo, where she met with the new High Representative Miroslav Lajcak and his Principal Deputy Raffi Gregorian. She also met with EUFOR Commander Admiral Whitthauer, NATO Commander General Wightman and Commander of the Integrated Police Unit Colonel Aglieco. The Prosecutor also met with members of the Presidency, Haris Silajdzic and Zeljko Komsic, as well as with the Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj. While in Sarajevo, she had separate meetings with OSA Director Almir Dzuvo and the RS Minister of interior Stanislav Cadjo. Later that day, the Prosecutor also participated in the 7th conference of the International Association of Genocide Scholars.


On 11 July, the Prosecutor took part in the annual ceremony at the Potocari Memorial Center and cemetery. While in Srebrenica, Prosecutor Del Ponte also met with representatives of victims’ associations and discussed various issues of concern.


From Sarajevo, Prosecutor Del Ponte went to Croatia to participate in the Regional Conference of State Prosecutors held on Brijuni. The Prosecutor strongly supports regional cooperation which should lead to the elimination of any possible obstacles to the successful prosecution of war crimes cases. This is a process the Office of the Prosecutor has been strongly supporting for several years.


While in Croatia - the Prosecutor had official meetings with President Stjepan Mesic and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader. President Mesic and Prime Minister Sanader, together with Minister of Justice Ana Lovrin and State Attorney Mladen Bajic, also received all the participants of the regional conference of prosecutors – the state prosecutors of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro.



Questions:


Asked if there was new information on the Prosecutor’s successor, Kavran said there was no new information. She stated that it was a matter of waiting to hear from New York and that the Prosecutor has been asked to stay on until December. So far, the Swiss government has authorized this from their side, but the Prosecutor was still waiting for the Security Council decision, said Kavran. She stated that it was up to the Security Council as far as succession goes and that the Prosecutor’s current mandate ends in September. According to past experience, the decision, in the form of a resolution, would come some weeks before the end of the current mandate.
