New War Demographics Feature on the ICTY website

Today, the website of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia launched a new feature highlighting the pioneering use of war demographic findings in trials by the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP). The pages provide insight into the analysis conducted for various episodes of the 1990s conflicts of the former Yugoslavia, in particular those in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.
The ICTY was the first international court to use demographic estimates not only of the number of fatalities but also figures for wounded, missing, exhumed and identified persons, internally displaced and refugees.
One of the key findings of the OTP’s demographers concerns the number of victims of the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The final estimate rests at 104,732 individuals killed, as stated in a report produced in January 2010, after 12 years of data collection.
The feature offers a greater understanding of the complex requirements of demographic experts and the necessary distinctions they make.
Available in English, French and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, the feature also showcases a vast selection of expert reports which were accepted into evidence during ICTY trials. Today, war demographics data are regularly used in ongoing cases.
This feature is part of the ICTY’s wider efforts to consolidate and present the vast array of the Tribunal’s achievements as the institution nears the completion of its mandate.
