First Set of Transcripts in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian made available on Tribunal’s website

The first set of trial transcripts transcribed into local languages is now available on the Tribunal’s website. The transcripts are published on the relevant case pages, providing users with easy access to all available dates. This forms part of the Tribunal’s commitment to ensuring judicial transparency and the accessibility of its public records.

The trial transcripts were transcribed as part of the War Crimes Justice Project (WCJP), which aims to enhance the capacity of regional judiciaries to handle complex war crimes cases, by assisting in the transfer of knowledge and materials from the ICTY to legal professionals in the region.

The transcripts are being produced in the region’s local languages from the audio recordings of ICTY court hearings. Until October 2010, the trial transcripts were available only in English and French, the official languages of the ICTY.

With a few hundred pages added every day to the Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (B/C/S) version of the ICTY website, the goal is to have all the available transcripts in the local languages on the website by the end of July 2012. To date, the ICTY Court Records database (ICR), which houses all of the ICTY’s public court records, already contains more than 15,000 pages of these transcripts.

Transcripts have been uploaded in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian for the following cases: Milan Martić, Dražen Erdemović, Mitar Vasiljević, Milan Lukić and Sredoje Lukić, Radislav Krstić, Momčilo Krajišnik, Sefer Halilović, Radovan Karadžić, Slobodan Milošević, Vidoje Blagojević and Dragan Jokić, Momčilo Perišić, Milan Milutinović et al., Vlastimir Đorđević, Vujadin Popović et al., Zdravko Tolimir, Mićo Stanišić and Stojan Župljanin.

The War Crimes Justice Project is a 4-million euro regional project funded by the European Union and carried out by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), in partnership with the ICTY, the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, and OSCE field operations.
