ICTY conducts ‘Training of Trainers’ Session in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Today the Tribunal is completing a two-day ‘training of trainers’ course with 8 trainers and educators from the Centres for Judicial and Prosecutorial Training (CEST) of the Federation of BiH and Republika Srpska, the State Court of BiH, the State Prosecutors Office, and the Criminal Defence Section of the Ministry of Justice of BiH as part of the War Crimes Justice Project (WCJP).

The goal of the training, which is taking place at the CEST in Sarajevo, is to strengthen the professional and organisational capacities of identified legal educators, in order to continue providing training to judges, prosecutors, legal advisers, legal associates and defence lawyers once the WCJP has been completed.

As part of the WCJP, the Tribunal conducted a total of 31 training sessions across the region between November 2010 and July 2011, sharing its institutional knowledge and specialised skills with a total of 149 legal professionals.

Commenting on the training session, Radoslav Marjanović, Acting Director of the CEST of the Federation of BiH, said: “We are glad, with the help of the other training centre in Republika Srpska, to provide the educational resources needed by legal professionals, thereby ensuring the successful future prosecution of war crimes.”

The training session covered the use of electronic research tools such as the website, the ICTY Court Records Database and the Appeals Chambers Case Law Research Tool. It also covered making requests to the ICTY for legal assistance and for variation of protective measures for witnesses and documents under the Tribunal’s Rules of Procedure and Evidence.

The War Crimes Justice Project is a 4-million euro regional project funded by the European Union and carried out by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe/Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) in partnership with the ICTY, the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and OSCE field operations.
