ICTY Weekly Press Briefing - 11 September 2013

Date: 11.09.2013
Time: 12:30

Registry and Chambers:

Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

I’ll start by updating you on some developments in our ongoing cases.

In the case of Vojislav Šešelj, on 6 September Vice President Agius reconvened the Panel originally appointed to consider Šešelj’s motion for disqualification of Judge Harhoff from his case. The panel has been asked to rule on the Prosecution’s motion of 3 September asking for reconsideration of the panel’s decision of 28 August disqualifying Judge Harhoff.

On 9 September, Zdravko Tolimir filed his amended notice of appeal against the Trial Chamber Judgement rendered in December last year. He presents 25 grounds of appeal asking the Appeals Chamber to overturn all convictions or, in the alternative, to “significantly reduce his sentence”. Tolimir was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in 1995 after the fall of the enclaves of Srebrenica and Žepa in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the case of Mićo Stanišić and Stojan Župljanin, Judge Meron yesterday assigned Vice President Agius to consider Župljanin’s ‘Second Request to Amend his Notice of Appeal and Supplement his Appeal Brief’ filed on 9 September. In this Request, Župljanin seeks leave to include a new ground in his appeal, challenging the violation of his right to a fair trial in light of Judge Harhoff’s letter published on 13 June 2013

In the courtrooms, the trial of Ratko Mladić is scheduled for this week and next. Today, a military expert Richard Butler resumes his testimony. The Prosecution has so far called 137 witnesses in this trial.

The trial of Goran Hadžić is also sitting for the remainder of the week and next. At the moment, the Prosecution witness GH-168 resumes testimony in closed session. Earlier this morning, witness Ivan Gašparović testified about events in Dalj, Croatia. The Prosecution has so far called 75 witnesses.

Finally, I would like to add that the ICTY will participate in the Municipality of the Hague’s sixth annual ‘International Day’ on Sunday, 29 September 2013. The event offers to the public a glimpse behind the scenes of some international organisations based in The Hague. The Tribunal will be open to visitors from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a welcome address by President Meron followed by question and answer sessions, guided tours of a courtroom and an exhibition and films introducing visitors to work of the Tribunal. In addition, general presentations will take place throughout the day and ICTY officials will be on hand to meet visitors, to answer questions, and to talk about their work at the Tribunal.
