If you were the victim of war crimes, would you come forward to testify?
What would you do? If you lived through a traumatic, haunting experience, would you be prepared to talk about it in public?
Through Their Eyes: Witnesses to Justice profiles 5 ordinary women and men who survived a bloody conflict, rife with murder, torture and the uprooting of whole communities. Rather than stay silent, they chose to come forward to testify about their experiences and in some cases, about the perpetrators at whose hands they suffered.
This documentary depicts the crucial role played by victims and witnesses in the prosecution of those alleged to be responsible for crimes committed during the 1990s on the territory of the former Yugoslavia. The film portrays the courage it takes to come to the ICTY to testify, and explores the five witnesses’ motives for doing so. With the participation of ICTY judges and staff, as well as footage from actual ICTY testimonies, Through Their Eyes: Witnesses to Justice provides a lasting reminder of the contributions made by witnesses to international justice and the importance of live testimony in an international judicial context
