  ICTY WEEKLY PRESS BRIEFING Latest
Developments

Please note that this
is not a verbatim transcript of the Press
Briefing. It is merely a summary.

Date: 12.07.2005

Time: 12:20

Registry and Chambers:

Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry
and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

You will have seen the sentencing judgement
in the case against Miroslav Bralo this
morning and I know that you all now possess
the press release, summary of the judgement
and the judgement itself. Other than
to note the 20-year sentence handed down
by the judges, I will not go into the
detail of the findings yet again here.
If for any reason one of you has not
received the relevant materials, please
let us know and we will supply them to
you.

As was announced in court this morning,
in the third and final session of the
Milosevic trial tomorrow, the judges
will hear submissions on the question
of extension of time allocated to the
accused for the presentation of his defence.
Each party will be allowed 15 minutes.

Next week, the trial of Milan Martic
will start with the opening statement
of the Prosecution on 13 December at
2.15 in Courtroom III. Hearings are also
scheduled for the following day at the
same time. The Defence can also elect
to make an opening statement at that
time if it wishes rather than at the
conclusion of the Prosecution’s
case, as allowed by the Rules. There
will be a pre-trial conference on 12
December between 6 and 8 p.m. in Courtroom
I. We will be putting out a ‘curtain
raiser’ press release in the coming
days.

This afternoon, there will be a hearing
to discuss the medical condition of Vladimir
Kovacevic starting at 2.15 p.m. in Courtroom
III. You will recall that in June 2004
Kovacevic was provisionally released
to a mental institution in Serbia and
Montenegro in order to receive specialized
medical treatment. The Trial Chamber
has invited the Prosecution, Defence,
the Tribunal’s Medical Experts,
the Prosecution’s Medical Experts,
the Defence Medical Experts and the leading
psychiatrist or psychologist responsible
for the treatment of Kovacevic to be
present. Mr. Kovacevic is not required
to attend.

There will be status conferences in The
Prosecutor v. Pavle Strugar
on
Monday 12 December at 2.15 p.m. in
Courtroom I; in The Prosecutor v.
Boskoski and Tarculovski
on Monday
12 December at 4 p.m. in Courtroom
I; and in The Prosecutor v. Dragomir
Milosevic
on Tuesday 13 December
at 8 a.m. in Courtroom III.

On Thursday 15 December, the President
of the Tribunal, Judge Fausto Pocar will
be addressing the Security Council in
New York starting at around 10 a.m. (New
York time). We will provide you with
a copy of his speech as soon as it is
available.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Florence Hartmann, Spokesperson for
the Office of the Prosecutor, made the
following statement:

Ms. Del Ponte will be traveling
to Belgrade on Thursday 8 December. The
Prosecutor will attend a conference organised
by the Youth Initiative of Serbia on
the "Rule of Law: Dealing with the
past and Building the Future"

In the afternoon, Ms. Del Ponte
will be meeting with Mr. Rasim Ljajic,
President of the National Council for
Cooperation with the ICTY of Serbia Montenegro,
and then after that with Mr. Vojislav
Kostunica, Prime Minister of the Republic
of Serbia. This meeting will be followed
by a media opportunity around 4.15 p.m.
at the Government building in Belgrade.

Next week Ms. Del Ponte will be
in the United States. On Tuesday 13 and
Wednesday 14 December, she will be meeting
with US officials at the State Department
and at the Congress.

On Thursday 15 December, she will be
addressing the Security Council. The
session on the ICTY and ICTR has been
scheduled for the moment for around 10
a.m. New York time. Therefore the speeches
won't be available before late afternoon
here, in The Hague. My assistant, Ljiljana,
will provide you with an electronic copy
of the Prosecutor's speech as soon as
Ms. Del Ponte has presented it to the
Security Council. Depending on the time,
it should be also available on the same
day on the ICTY website.

Questions:

Asked whether the OTP would appeal
the Limaj and Musliu acquittal, Hartmann
answered that it was too early to say
as the Prosecution had to study the judgement
before making a decision.

Asked whether the OTP could give
more detailed information regarding the
basis of the re-opening of the Blaskic
case, Hartmann replied that she could
not give more information since the supporting
material upon which the judges would
make their decision was still confidential.

Landale added that the matter was
now before the judges and so it would
be inappropriate to comment any further
on it. He referred journalists to the
documents that had been made public and
to Rules 119, 120 and 121 of the Rules
of Procedure and Evidence of the Tribunal.

A journalist asked whether it was
correct that Milosevic would move to
another cell. Landale replied that there
was currently a move underway in the
Detention Unit to put all of the accused
into a more consolidated area. The move
had been planned for some time. For obvious
reasons, he explained he was not able
to give more information about the move.
