The series of presentations held in Kosovo high schools about the work and achievements of the Tribunal concluded this week with visits to Kamenicë, Gurakoc, Fushë Kosovë and Prishtinë on 2, 3, 4 and 5 February, respectively.
ICTY representative Driton Gashi met with more than 160 pupils, informing them about the Tribunal’s role in bringing to justice some of those most responsible for the crimes committed during the wars in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Kosovo high school students also learnt about the ICTY’s contribution to international criminal law and justice.
The students were keen to hear more about cases specifically concerning Kosovo, as their regular curriculum does not cover this topic. They were also interested in learning how indictments were issued by the ICTY Prosecutor, what type of information and evidence ICTY judges take into account when issuing a judgement, who is dealing with war crimes cases that have not been tried by the ICTY and what is the Tribunal’s role in this respect.
The Youth Outreach project is currently in its fourth cycle. During this school year, the Tribunal’s representatives have visited ten high schools across Kosovo, having delivered the first five presentations in December 2015. The Outreach Programme will continue its activities in Kosovo by organising lectures for university students during the spring semester of 2016.
