ICTY Registry Liaison Officer in BiH Almir Alić spoke today at the regional youth conference “There is always a choice – Civil courage in times of war and peace” which was held in Tuzla, BiH.
Almir held a workshop on guilty pleas and their role in establishing facts about war crimes for a group of 18 students from Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and BiH. The participants took an active part in the discussion about criminal responsibility for serious violations of international humanitarian law in the former Yugoslavia. In addition, they asked numerous questions related to the wider context of Tribunal’s legacy.
Participants shared their positive impressions about the ICTY Outreach presentation after the event. Stefan Jeremić, a student from Belgrade said: “This experience was invaluable. The presentation was interactive and inspirational with a creative approach to very serious subjects. We need more of such presentations.”
The conference of students and youth activists in Tuzla was jointly organised by Forum Civil Peace Service and the Post-Conflict Research Center. The aim of the conference was to stimulate discussion on topics such as dealing with the past, the culture of remembrance and memory, with a particular focus on civil courage.
