The ICTY field office in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, received 14 postgraduate students from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas on 4 July, for a briefing on the work of the Tribunal.
As part of a broader study trip to the region, the students engaged in a dynamic discussion with ICTY representative, Mr Almir Alić, about the current activities and achievements of the Tribunal.
Pursuing degrees in dispute resolution and conflict management, the visitors were particularly interested in local attitudes towards trials concerning war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, and reactions from the region to specific judgments delivered by the Tribunal. They were also keen to learn about the role played by the Tribunal in assisting those in the region to come to terms with the past and combating the denial of crimes committed during the conflict, as well as the transfer of ICTY cases to national jurisdictions in the former Yugoslavia.
