ACCUSED GORAN LAJIC, GUARD AT THE KERATERM CAMP, ARRESTED IN GERMANY
On Monday 18 March 1996, the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was notified of the arrest of Goran LAJIC by the German police, arrested that same day.
Goran LAJIC is one of the persons named in the indictment "Sikirica and others" issued by the Tribunal on 21 July 1995 in relation to the investigation into the events of the Keraterm Camp.
BACKGROUND OF THE INDICTMENT
LAJIC is accused of perpetrating GRAVE BREACHES, VIOLATIONS OF THE LAWS AND CUSTOMS OF WAR and CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, in his capacity as a guard or interrogator at Keraterm Camp. He is charged with INDIVIDUAL CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY for the following alleged acts: On an evening in mid-July 1992, Goran LAJIC was one of a group of Keraterm guards who severely beat a group of
detainees at the Camp (including Jasmin IZEJERI, Spija MESIC, and Drago TOKMANOVIC). Several men died as a result of the assaults. Around the latter part of June 1992, LAJIC severely beat Emsud BAHONJIC (and other detainees at Keraterm), causing his death.
INTERPOL'S DECISIVE CONTRIBUTION
The Tribunal wishes to acknowledge Interpol's decisive contribution. The arrest of Goran LAJIC is directly the result of the Interpol's initial efforts.
Upon being alerted of the indictments, Interpol issues alert-notices to its members throughout the world.
As a result of this alert-notice, the German police apprehended Goran LAJIC, under Interpol guidelines and operating procedures.
Interpol's action in this case demonstrates the excellent working relationship which exists between Interpol and the Tribunal.
THE PROCEDURE
On Wednesday 20 March 1996, the Registrar has forwarded to the German authorities a warrant of arrest for Goran LAJIC and an order for his surrender to the Tribunal.
The Registry is now making the necessary provisions for the transfer of the accused.
