Haradin Bala Transferred To France To Serve Sentence

Haradin Bala was transferred yesterday to France to serve his sentence of 13 years’ imprisonment for crimes committed against Serb and Kosovo Albanian civilians in the Kosovo Liberation Army-run Lapušnik/Llapushnik prison camp between May and July 1998.

Bala was a guard at the prison camp where he had a personal role in the maintenance and enforcement of the inhumane conditions there, aiding the torture of one prisoner and participating in the murder of nine prisoners.

On 30 November 2005, he was convicted for torture, cruel treatment and murder and sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment. Fatmir Limaj and Isak Musliu, two co-accused, were acquitted of all charges. The Appeals Chamber upheld the Trial Chamber judgement and confirmed Bala’s convictions on 27 September 2007.

A case information sheet providing an overview of the case can be found on the Tribunal’s website at: http://www.icty.org/x/cases/limaj/cis/en/cis_limaj_al_en.pdf

The Tribunal indicted 161 persons for serious violations of humanitarian law committed on the territory of former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 2001. Proceedings against 113 have been concluded.
