Stanišić & Simatović Start Of Trial Postponed
The start of trial of Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović was postponed today by Trial Chamber III due to the medical condition of Stanišić.
A hearing was scheduled for 1 April 2008 when the judges will reassess the health status of the accused.
A report by the ICTY’s Detention Unit medical officer stated that Stanišić suffers from pouchitis, osteoporosis and has kidney stones, while he is also being treated for deep depression.
Judge Patrick Robinson, presiding, ordered the accused be examined by an independent psychiatrist to be appointed by the Registry and a report be sent to the Chamber by Monday 31 March 2008. A medical report from a gastroenterologist, as well as the weekly update from Detention Unit medical officer are to be provided at the same time.
Stanišić and Simatović, high level officials of Serbian Secret Service, are accused of having directed, organized, equipped, trained, armed and financed secret units of the Serbian State Security which murdered, persecuted and deported Croats, Bosnian Muslims, Bosnian Croats and other non-Serb civilians from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia between 1991 and 1995.
