REGISTRY AND CHAMBERS
Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following
statement
Good afternoon,
The President of the Tribunal, Judge Theodor Meron, will pay an
official visit to Berlin this Monday and Tuesday, 26 and 27 January,
following an invitation from the Government of the Federal Republic
of Germany. He will meet with the German Minister of Foreign Affairs
and Minister of Justice, as well as other senior Government officials.
He will also deliver a lecture at the Humboldt University and visit
other research institutions whose work is of interest to the Tribunal.
I would just draw your attention to a Decision in the Milosevic
case in which the Appeals Chamber dismissed the "Interlocutory
Appeal by the Amici Curiae Against the Trial Chamber Order Concerning
the Presentation and Preparation of the Defence Case".
Judge Shahabuddeen appended a Separate Opinion.
This means that the three-month break between the end of the
Prosecution case, currently scheduled to finish on 17 February,
and the start of the Defence case is now set.
With regard to the court schedule and in addition to the
ongoing trials
The further initial appearance for Milan Babic that was scheduled
for this afternoon at 3 p.m. in has been postponed until further
notice.
A reminder that there will be a status conference in The Prosecutor
v. Milutinovic et al this afternoon between 3 and 4.30 p.m.,
but that it will now be in Courtroom I and not in Courtroom II.
There will be a status conference in The Prosecutor v. Milan
Martic et al tomorrow, 22 January between 2.30 and 3.30 p.m.
in Courtroom II.
There will be a status conference in The Prosecutor v. Pasko
Ljubicic on Friday 23 January starting at 2.30 p.m. in Courtroom
II.
The accused are to be present at all three status conferences.
Finally, proceedings in the trial of Colonel Bagosora at the ICTR
can now be viewed in this room (the fishbowl) between 6 a.m. and
2 p.m. provided the room is available. You can currently view the
testimony of General Dallaire.

Florence Hartmann, Spokeswomen for the Office of the
Prosecutor made the following statement:
On behalf of the Office of the Prosecutor and myself
I just would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy
new year.
Questions:
A journalist asked how it was possible that the Babic initial appearance
was postponed again since he had not yet entered a plea, which according
to the Rules should take place within a period of 30 days, and if
not, a plea of not guilty should be entered by the Judges for him.
Landale replied that of course ultimately this was a decision for
the Judges, however he said that was not prepared to make any further
comments on this specific case.
Asked whether he could confirm reports in the media mentioning
that the start of the Krajisnik trial would start on 3 February
2004, Landale said that he could. He added that the first two weeks
of the trial would be four-day weeks, and the second two five-day
weeks. This would be followed by a break over Easter. This would
allow the Defence more time to catch up. This trial had been delayed
for two main reasons: firstly Krajisnik was originally going to
stand trial along side Biljana Plavsic which was obviously no longer
the case, and secondly there had been difficulties with one of his
Defence Counsel who had been suspended from a bar association in
the U.S. and as a result was removed from the list of Defence Counsel
who can practice at the ICTY. The new Defence Counsel had to be
given sufficient time to review the quite substantial material pertaining
to this case, he stated.
