Weekly Press Briefing - 13 June 2012

Date:  13.06.2012
Time: 12:00

Registry and Chambers:

Nerma Jelačić, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

I’ll turn directly to the courtrooms. In the trial of Radovan Karadžić, the Prosecution is currently responding to the Accused’s Rule 98bis submissions in Courtroom I. According to Rule 98bis, the Trial Chamber can enter a judgement of acquittal on any count in the indictment by oral decision at the close of the Prosecution case if there is no evidence capable of supporting a conviction.

Looking to the forthcoming courtroom schedule, a status conference in the case of Goran Hadžić will take place tomorrow, 14 June at 14:30 in Courtroom III.

The trial in the third contempt case of Vojislav Šešelj will resume on Monday 18 June at 9am in Courtroom 1. Šešelj is accused of having disobeyed Chambers' orders to remove certain books and documents from his website. These orders were passed after his convictions for having published four books he authored and six confidential filings which all reveal confidential information on protected witnesses.

Finally, in the case of Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović, the Chamber announced last week that closing arguments will be heard later this year from 11 to 13 September, which will mark the end of the trial. The Prosecution will have four hours to present their arguments and each Defence team will have two and a half hours. Final trial briefs are scheduled to be submitted by 21 August 2012.

Office of the Prosecutor:

Frederick Swinnen, Special Advisor to the Prosecutor, made no statement.
