ICTY Weekly Press Briefing - 4 June 2014

Date: 4.06.2014
Time: 12:30 p.m.

Registry and Chambers:

Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

As a reminder for tomorrow afternoon, in his capacity as the President for both the ICTY and Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT), President Meron will present the Tribunal’s bi-annual completion strategy and Mechanism’s progress reports to the UN Security Council. His address will be followed by that of the Tribunal’s Prosecutor, Serge Brammertz and ICTR and MICT Prosecutor Hassan Jallow. The addresses will be available on the Tribunal’s website soon after the delivery of the speeches. They can also be viewed live on the UN website webcast link.

In the public redacted version of his decision, filed 28 May 2014, MICT President Meron granted early release effective 25 May to Ranko Češić. President Meron based his decision on the grounds that Češić had completed two-thirds of his sentence of 18 years’ imprisonment, demonstrated signs of rehabilitation and cooperated with the Prosecution.

I will now move onto the courtroom activities.

The Defence case for Goran Hadzic has been rescheduled to begin on 3 July 2014 at 9:00 in courtroom III. The Trial Chamber rescheduled the start of the Defence case due to the unavailability of Judges Mindua and Hall. The Pre-defence conference will remain scheduled for Tuesday, 17 June at 9:00 in courtroom III.

In the case of Ratko Mladić, the Chamber is currently hearing the testimony of Zdravko Čvoro, a former municipal official in Pale. The Defence has so far called 11 witnesses.
