REGISTRY AND
CHAMBERS
Today, Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following
announcements:
As you will be
aware, the Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, paid a short visit to the Tribunal
yesterday, where he met among others, with the President, the Registrar, the
Prosecutor and the Judges. The Secretary-General thanked those present for their
contributions to the Tribunal and expressed his full support for its continued
work.
I have copies
of President McDonalds remarks to the Secretary-General available to those
who want them after this.
This morning the
Prosecution filed a Notice of Appeal in the Aleksovski case. Copies will be
made available as soon as possible.
On 17 May 1999,
Zlatko Aleksovski filed a Notice of Appeal against his judgement and sentence,
passed down on 7 May 1999.
In the Furundzija
case, on 17 May 1999, the Appeals chamber decided to extend the briefing schedule
in the appeal on the merits as follows:
The Appellants
brief shall be filed by 25 June 1999.
The Respondents
(in other words Prosecution) brief shall be filed by 26 July 1999.
The Appellant
may file a Reply by 10 August 1999.
Copies are available
after the briefing.
OFFICE OF THE
PROSECUTOR
Paul Risley, Spokesman
for the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP), announced that the Chief Prosecutor
and Deputy Prosecutor would meet this afternoon with US Ambassador at Large
for War Crimes, David Scheffer. He would be accompanied by the US Ambassador
to the Netherlands. He added that the meeting was being held at the request
of Ambassador Scheffer.
He also said that
the Prosecutor would leave today for Canada where she would receive an honorary
award from the University of New Brunswick. She would be back on Friday.
QUESTIONS:
Asked about
the regular visits by the Croatian Embassy to the Tribunal and whether there
was a pattern to these visits and whether other embassies from the former
Yugoslavia also had regular contacts with the Tribunal, Landale replied that
the Tribunal maintained regular contact with a number of embassies from the
region.
Asked whether
there had been any contact with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
(FRY) and the Tribunal since their refusal to accept the arrest warrant of
Arkan (Zeljko Raznjatovic), Landale replied that he was not aware of any contact
since the beginning of the airstrikes.
Asked for a
reaction from the Prosecutor about the rumour of her possible departure from
the Tribunal to take a seat on the Canadian Supreme Court, Risley replied
that the Prosecutor had made no public comment, apart from indicating that
she had not received an offer and that if she received an offer she would
consider it.
