AND CHAMBERS
Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:
First,
as you should all be aware, the trial of Radoslav Brdjanin and Momir Talic started
today in Courtroom I before Trial Chamber II, composed of Judges, Agius (presiding)
Janu and Taya. You should have received our "curtain raiser" press
release detailing the background to the case, but copies are available for those
who did not.
In the Milosevic
case, you should also be aware that Trial Chamber III issued, on 21 January,
its Order on the Prosecution’s Motion for Variation, which varied the
Trial Chamber’s Order of 11 January.
Copies
of the Prosecution’s Interlocutory Appeal Brief filed on 15 January, are also
available for those who don’t yet possess a copy.
On 16 January
the Written Reasons Following Oral Decision of 15 January 2002 on the Prosecution’s
Motion for Joinder in the Blagojevic, Obrenovic and Jokic
cases were filed.
Then,
on 22 January, we received the Motion to File Joinder Indictments Pursuant
to the Oral Directive of the Trial Chamber on 15 January 2002, which included
the new joint indictment. Copies of both those documents will be available after
this briefing.
On
18 January, the defence preliminary motion in the Dubrovnik case against Pavle
Strugar was filed. Copies will be available after this.
On
10 January 2002, Dragan Jokic filed a Proposal for Provisional Release.

In
terms of scheduling:
On
31 January 2001, a provisional release hearing for Miodrag Jokic will take place
in Courtroom II at 4.30 p.m.
The
following day, 1 February, there will be a provisional release hearing for Rahim
Ademi, also in Courtroom II at 2.30 p.m.
Finally,
a visit of senior legal professionals from Serbia to the Tribunal is taking
place this week, in order for them to view at first-hand ongoing trials at the
Tribunal. The group has also heard presentations from a number of key Tribunal
officials, including the President of the Tribunal, Judge Claude Jorda, the
Registrar, Hans Holthuis, and other senior members of the OTP and Registry.
The
visit, which as been coordinated by the Tribunal’s Outreach Programme, has been
supported by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and
the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) as part of an ongoing
training programme concerning international humanitarian law for members of
the Serbian judiciary.
The
38 persons in the group have already participated in three specialist seminars
on international criminal law organised by the Belgrade-based Humanitarian Law
Center (HLC). The seminars, attended by several Tribunal officials from Chambers
and the OTP, took place between August and November 2001 in Palic and in Belgrade.
Finally,
we have copies of the latest Judicial Supplement (number 29), available after
the briefing.

Joris, Advisor to the Prosecutor, made no statement.
QUESTIONS:
Asked whether
a date had been set for the appeal hearing in the Milosevic case, Landale
replied that a date had not yet been set. He added that he would inform the
media as soon as he knew.
Asked whether
the OTP was satisfied with the Trial Chamber’s Order on the Prosecution
Motion for Variation, Joris replied that it was.
