Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:
Good afternoon,
On behalf of the President
of the Tribunal, Judge Theodor Meron, I would like to remind you that this Friday,
25 July 2003, will mark the eighth anniversary of the indictment by the ICTY,
for the first time, of Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic. Both have been indicted
for, among other things, genocide and crimes against humanity for their alleged
central roles in the mass murder and persecution of non-Serbs in Bosnia and
Herzegovina in the first half of the 1990’s.
The fact that both men are
still at large is a disgrace. To be absolutely clear, the Tribunal will not
consider its work done until Karadzic and Mladic are brought to justice. President
Meron calls again for those who are in a position to do so, to apprehend these
individuals and ensure their transfer to The Hague for a fair trial according
to international law, with the panoply of due process protections.
Among the court documents
we have received since the last briefing, the following are brought to your
attention:
In the Trial Chambers:
On 21 July in The Prosecutor
v.Milomir Stakic, we received a "Scheduling Order" from Trial
Chamber II, in which the Trial Chamber notified the parties that the Judgement
in the case would be rendered on Thursday 31 July 2003 at 3 p.m. You are all
welcome to attend.
On 18 July, in
The Prosecutor v. Enver Hadzihasanovic, and Amir Kubura, we received
from Trial Chamber II the "Decision on Joint Defence Oral Motion for
Reconsideration of ‘Decision on Urgent Motion for Ex Parte Oral Hearing on Allocation
of Resources to the Defence and Consequences Thereof for the Rights of the Accused
to a Fair Trial", in which the Trial Chamber denied the oral motion.
In terms of other court
documents:
On 17 July, in The Prosecutor
v.Predrag Banovic, we received the "Prosecution Sentencing Brief
for Predrag Banovic".
On 18 July, in The Prosecutor
v. Fatmir Limaj, Haradin Bala and Isak Musliu, we received the "Partly
Confidential Prosecution’s Response to Motion for Haradin Bala for Provisional
Release".
In the same case on 22 July,
we received a letter from the Director of UNMIK’s Department of Justice in response
to the 16 July "Decision to Invite the Special Representative of the
Secretary General to Submit a Statement".
On 21 July, in The Prosecutor
v. Slobodan Milosevic, we received the "Amicus Curiae Observations
Proprio Motu on Relevant Issues of International Law".
On 21 July, again in The
Prosecutor v. Slobodan Milosevic, we received the "Corrigendum to
Dr. Ivan Kristan’s Expert Report on Constitutional Law, Filed Pursuant to Rule
94 bis".
On 21 July in The Prosecutor
v. Mile Mrksic, Miroslav Radic and Veselin Sljivancanin, we received the
"Prosecution’s Motion for Leave to File a Consolidated Amended Indictment".
On 22 July, in The Prosecutor
v. Veselin Sljivancanin, we received the "Appeal of Mr Goran Petronjevic
on the Registry’s Decision Declining Assignment of Defense Counsels to the Accused"
addressed the President of the Tribunal, Judge Theodor Meron.

for the Office of the Prosecutor made the following statement:
The Prosecutor will be in
New York over the next few days to speak with the Secretary-General of the United
Nations about the situation regarding the ICTY and the ICTR.
