Registry and Chambers:

Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:

Good afternoon,

Last Saturday, 25 June 2005, ICTY Outreach, in conjunction with The Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Republika Srpska, held a conference in Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina, entitled, "ICTY Cases in Relation to War Crimes Committed in Prijedor". The aim of the conference was to provide the local community with a detailed and comprehensive picture of the Tribunal's activities in relation to crimes committed in the area of Prijedor, with particular emphasis on cases that have been completed before the ICTY.

Tribunal representatives, including the Registrar, Hans Holthuis, spoke before an audience who comprised members of victims' associations, municipal authorities, judicial institutions and law enforcement agencies, as well as local politicians and civil society representatives.

Twelve persons have been found guilty for the part they played in the crimes and a further five persons are at the appeal, trial or pre-trial stage. In addition, Ratko Mladic, Radovan Karadžic and Stojan Župljanin, who are still at large, have also been charged with crimes committed in this area.

In addition, on Sunday 26 June, the Registrar attended two events to commemorate some of the victims of crimes committed in the Prijedor municipality. He first went to the Keraterm camp where he met with survivors and relatives of victims of this camp and then went to a memorial ceremony in Kozarac, where 59 victims were reburied, and offered condolences on behalf of the ICTY.
