Weekly Press Briefing

REGISTRY AND
CHAMBERS
Jim Landale, Spokesman for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:
There is due to
be a meeting of the Tribunal’s Bureau today, where the subject of the selection
of the first six ad litem judges will be discussed among the President
of the Tribunal, the Vice-President and the Presiding Judges of the three Trial
Chambers. It is hoped that a final decision will be reached by the beginning
of next week and the six ad litem judges that are selected will be here
in The Hague by early September.
The Registrar
of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, Mr. Adama Deing, will be
visiting the ICTY tomorrow and will meet with various senior officials from
the Tribunal. The meetings will seek to boost the lines of communication between
the two ad hoc Tribunals.
With regard to
court documents, we received on 22 June the briefs on adjustment of sentence
for Delic and Mucic in the Celebici case. Responding briefs are due by the 13
July and the hearing will be held on 27 July.
We received on
25 June the third amended indictment for Milorad Krnojelac. Copies of all documents
will be available on request.
In terms of scheduling,
there will be a status conference in
- The Prosecutor
v. Nikolic case on Friday 29 June at 10.00 a.m. in Courtroom II and;
- The Prosecutor
v.Obrenovic case at 10.30 a.m. on Friday 29 June also in Courtroom II.
Finally, the latest
edition of the Judicial Supplement is now available in English with the French
version to follow shortly.
PROSECUTION
Florence Hartmann, Spokeswoman for the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) made no
statement.
QUESTIONS:
Asked about
the postponement of the Prosecutor’s visit to Belgrade last week, Hartmann
replied that they have not, at the moment, scheduled a new date for the visit.
Asked about
news reports from Belgrade that the transfer procedures for the three officers
from Vukovar are to start tomorrow and whether the Tribunal is ready to receive
not only Mr. Milosevic but other indicted people, Hartmann replied that the
Tribunal was expecting all indicted persons residing in FRY to be transferred
to The Hague. She added that on the question of the three from the Vukovar
indictment, she has not received confirmation on this issue.
Asked whether
the Prosecution has direct communication with the Department of Justice department
in FRY, Hartmann replied that the OTP did have contact with the Department
of Justice and perhaps it was just a question of timing this morning. She
added, that it was important for the Department of Justice to work on the
concrete list of sealed and public indictments and understand that they have
to send all of the indicted people currently residing in FRY to The Hague,
as soon as possible.
Landale added
that on behalf of Registry and Chambers, they were ready to accept and accommodate
all individuals indicted by the Tribunal who were still at large.
Asked if it
was true that there was a helicopter waiting for Milosevic to take him to
Scheveningen Landale replied that the Tribunal does not comment on operational
matters no matter what the allegation. The security and transfer of indicted
individuals are not discussed, he added.
