ICTY explains Legal Aid policy in new web feature

The Tribunal’s Communications Service today launched a new web feature on legal aid, providing a comprehensive overview of the financial support provided by the Tribunal to individuals standing trial.

The feature outlines the methods the Tribunal uses to determine the financial status of the accused at the three main stages of a trial (pre-trial, trial and appeals) and the level of additional funding required, if any, to ensure the remuneration of a defence team. The feature also provides new information on the financial support that self-represented accused may receive to fund members of their defence team.

An overview of how many accused standing trial at the ICTY have received legal aid and how many did not request it is also provided, together with the number of those who are undergoing an inquiry into their financial means.

Ensuring that the accused have the appropriate means to defend themselves before the Tribunal is an essential element of a fair trial.

The feature is available in English, French and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, and forms part of the ICTY's ongoing efforts to maintain transparency and inform the public about the work of the Tribunal.
