Fourth round of the Youth Outreach Project kicks off in the region

Registry | | The Hague |

The Tribunal’s Outreach programme today began the fourth round of its Youth Outreach Project with a lecture on “Guilty Pleas in the practice of the ICTY” presented to students of the Straniak Academy for Democracy and Human Rights Summer School in Ulcinj, Montenegro. The Youth Outreach Project is part of the ICTY’s continued efforts to reach out to students across the region and provide information about the Tribunal’s work and wider issues of transitional justice and post-conflict recovery.

The lecture by Registry Liaison Officer to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Almir Alić, provided the students with an overview of the legal aspects of guilty pleas in relation to serious violations of international humanitarian law while. In addition the students viewed several statements of guilt given in court by accused before the ICTY.

Speaking about the lecture participant Anja Žužek said, “The lecture was informative and interactive and for me as a lawyer, a truly inspiring experience. The lecture was definitely an added value to the Academy and it can serve as an example on how to work in the future while realizing transitional justice and reconciliation, especially in this region.”

As part of this fourth round of the Project, the ICTY Outreach Programme will deliver lectures and presentations to universities and highs schools throughout the former Yugoslavia.

Since its launch in December 2011, more than 8,000 high-school and university students from across the region have taken part in the Youth Outreach Project.

The Outreach Programme benefits from the support of the European Union. The Youth Outreach Project is generously supported by the Finnish Government

As the ICTY moves towards the completion of its mandate, the Outreach Programme is intensifying its efforts to increase the access of local communities to information on the Tribunal’s achievements. In doing so, the Outreach Programme seeks to promote a greater understanding of the Tribunal’s work and to cement its legacy throughout the region of the former Yugoslavia.
