Registry and Chambers:
Magdalena Spalińska, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:
Good afternoon,
Welcome to the last press briefing before the court’s winter recess which begins on Monday 22 December. Proceedings resume on Monday 12 January.
I’ll begin with developments in the case of Radovan Karadžić. Last Tuesday 2 December in a public redacted version of a decision filed originally on 25 July this year, the Appeals Chamber dismissed the appeal by the Accused in relation to the Registar’s decision on the Accused’s financial means. The Registrar’s decision was issued on 11 October 2012 and ordered the Accused to contribute 146, 501 euros towards the costs of his defence.
The Accused had asked for a review of the Registrar’s decision in November 2012 and this request was confidentially denied by the Trial Chamber in February 2014. In April of this year, the Accused filed a confidential appeal claiming that the Trial Chamber had erred in, amongst other issues, ‘the valuation of his real properties’ and in the ‘determination of readily disposable assets’. These grounds were dismissed by the Appeals Chamber in its latest decision of 25 July.
I’ll move on now to the Tribunal’s ongoing trials. The trial of Goran Hadžić is adjourned until 12 January 2015 due to the ill health of the Accused.
In the trial of Ratko Mladić, the Chamber is currently hearing the testimony of Milovan Lelek, former Territorial Defence officer in Rogatica. This is the 97th Defence witness in court.
Finally later today in his capacity as President of both the ICTY and Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals Judge Theodor Meron will present the Tribunal’s bi-annual completion strategy and Mechanism’s progress reports to the UN Security Council. His address, at around 4pm local time in The Hague will be followed by that of the Tribunal’s Prosecutor, Serge Brammertz and ICTR and MICT Prosecutor Hassan Jallow. The addresses will be available on the Tribunal’s website soon after the delivery of the speeches. They can also be viewed live on the UN website.
