Good afternoon,
Last week Judge Fausto Pocar, the Tribunal's President, reported Serbia to the Security Council for its failure to meet its international obligations towards the Tribunal. The situation in terms of Serbia's non-compliance with the issue under consideration remains unchanged today. The Tribunal expects Serbia to meet it meet its obligations towards the Tribunal.
President Pocar was in Slovenia yesterday where he met with the country’s President, Dr Danilo Türk, Dr Dimitrij Rupel, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr Janez Lenarčič, State Secretary and Head of the Government Office for European. Next month Mr Lenarčič will take over the helm of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) with which the President initiated a joint project focusing on the support for national judicial authorities in the former Yugoslavia.
And it is a busy week in the courtooms. Milan Martić, the former leader of Croatian Serbs, will apear before the appeals chamber tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. and Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in courtroom I. Martic was sentenced to 35 years' imprisonment for crimes including persecutions, murder and torture committed during the early nineties against Croats and other non-Serbs in Croatia.
The trials of Gotovina et al., Prlić et al., Popović et al., and Vojislav Šešelj will continue this week.
There will be a status conference in the Tolimir case next Monday, June 30 at 3 p.m. in courtroom III.
As a reminder, also next week at 09:00 on Thursday 3 July an appeals judgement is scheduled for Naser Orić, former senior commander of Bosnian Muslim forces in and around Srebrenica. Orić was convicted and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for failing to take steps to prevent the murder and cruel treatment of a number of Serb prisoners in the former UN ‘safe area’.
