Registry and Chambers:
Nerma Jelačić, Spokesperson for Registry and Chambers, made the following statement:
The Tribunal’s President, Judge Fausto Pocar, and Ambassador Christian Strohal of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) yesterday initiated the commencement of a joint project focusing on the support for national judicial authorities in the former Yugoslavia. The agreement is part of President Pocar’s effort at promoting a wide range of legacy projects dedicated to the development of international justice and providing support to national courts in meeting international standards.
President Pocar is today in Brussels where he will address the Working Group on Public International Law of the Council of the European Union. President Pocar will talk about the jurisprudence and the legacy of the Tribunal. The Working Group meets twice per semester to discuss issues relevant to the recent developments in international public law.
Next Wednesday, 4 June 2008, President Pocar and Prosecutor Serge Brammertz will brief the UN Security Council on the Tribunal’s completion strategy.
I now turn to recent decisions:
On Monday, Trial Chamber III granted Jovica Stanišić and Franko Simatović provisional release. However, the Decision has been appealed by the Prosecution which means that the Decision has been temporarily halted until the Appeals Chamber has ruled on the matter.
Please note that the Appeals Judgement in the Naser Orić case has been scheduled on 3 July 2008 at 9:00 in courtroom I. Orić, former Senior Commander of Bosnian Muslim forces in and around Srebrenica, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on 30 June 2006 for failing to take the necessary steps to prevent the murder and cruel treatment of a number of Serb prisoners in the former UN ‘safe area’.
As regards courtroom schedule for the remainder of the week:
This afternoon, there will be a Motion Hearing in the case of Momčilo Peršić. The hearing will be held in closed session and the accused, who is currently on provisional release, will be absent from court.
Hearings in Šešelj, Prlić et al., Gotovina et al. continue as scheduled.
Please note that there will be no press briefing next week.
Office of the Prosecutor:
Olga Kavran, Spokesperson for the Office of the Prosecutor, made no statement.
