Joint Statement of the President and Vice-President of the Tribunal – Judge Theodor Meron and Judge Carmel Agius

ICTY President Judge
Theodor Meron

We are honoured that our Colleagues have re-elected us as President and Vice-President of the Tribunal. We look forward to engaging with all stakeholders to ensure that the Tribunal’s remaining responsibilities are completed in a timely, fair, and effective fashion.

In the last year, the Tribunal rendered 13 trial, appeal, and contempt judgements and has now concluded proceedings against 136 of 161 indicted persons. Looking forward, we will be working to facilitate completion of remaining trial and appeal proceedings, while also ensuring a smooth transition of the Tribunal’s responsibilities to the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals. We also hope to deepen cooperation with national judiciaries in the former Yugoslavia.

As the Tribunal moves into the final years of its mandate, we will work in a close and consultative manner to build on the Tribunal’s manifold contributions to international criminal law and procedure. In this context, we underscore our gratitude for the dedicated efforts of the Tribunal’s Judges and staff, and for the continuing support of the international community.
