Judge Deschenes resigns for medical reasons

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia has the regret of announcing the resignation of Judge Jules DESCHENES, from Canada, because of ill-health reasons.

The resignation of Judge DESCHENES, who was Judge at the ICTY since 1993, is effective 1 May 1997.

In a letter informing the United Nations Secretary-General of Judge DESCHENES's departure, the President of the International Tribunal, Judge Antonio CASSESE writes that Judge DESCHENES "will be sorely missed. He has been an excellent Judge, always showing the highest judicial skills, impartiality and integrity".

President CASSESE has engaged the procedure for the replacement of Judge DESCHENES. This nomination will be made by the UN Secretary-General in consultation with the Presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly.
