LETTER FROM PRESIDENT JORDA TO PRESIDENT MESIC

Mr President,

Now that I have returned to The Hague, I wish to express to you my deepest gratitude for the welcome which you, personally, and your Government extended to me during my first visit to Croatia.

On this occasion, you were kind enough to explain to me the new approach taken by your country and your Government towards the Tribunal which I have the honour of presiding. I thank you for this.

As I mentioned to you, once all pending requests for co-operation have been met, I shall be sure to inform the Security Council that Croatia has complied with all its obligations towards the Tribunal.

You are well aware that during my visit, I also met with Mr Granic, first Vice-Prime Minister, Mr Picula, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr Ivanisevic, Minister of Justice.

These meetings were most productive and promising in every sense.

With respect to the possibility that hearings be held by the Tribunal in the Republic of Croatia, it is a proposal originally put by the Prosecutor to which I subscribe. However, it will be necessary to conduct a thorough analysis of the implications of such a plan together before proceeding with it.

Subject to your concurrence and that of the Prosecutor, I believe that all the issues relating to co-operation - in whatever form - between your country and the ICTY might justify a mechanism being created to enable further dialogue.

Lastly, allow me to express my thanks to you for all the co-operation you showed during my visit, which was undoubtedly marked by the Symposium in Opatija organised by the Croatian Law Centre and the Croatian Association of Criminal Sciences and Practice.

Please accept, Mr President, the assurances of my highest consideration.
