Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) to begin work in The Hague

 

The launch of the Hague Branch of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) will be marked by a ceremony to be held at 11 am on 1 July 2013 at the seat of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.

The ceremony will feature a keynote speech from United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs Patricia O’Brien. Senior officials from both the ICTY and the MICT, including ICTY and MICT President Theodor Meron, ICTY and MICT Registrar John Hocking, ICTY Prosecutor Serge Brammertz, and MICT Prosecutor Hassan Bubacar Jallow, will share their thoughts on the significance of the occasion. The Minister of Security and Justice of the Netherlands, Mr Ivo Opstelten, and the Mayor of The Hague, Mr Jozias van Aartsen, will also speak.

Established by the Security Council of the United Nations, the MICT is mandated to carry out a number of essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) after the completion of their respective mandates. The Arusha Branch of the MICT, which covers functions inherited from the ICTR and is located in Arusha, Tanzania, commenced functioning on 1 July 2012.


 Programme

The event at the Tribunal will be carried live through the Tribunal’s website.

A limited number of journalists will be able to cover the event from inside the Tribunal’s lobby. Broadcasters will be able to obtain the feed from break-out boxes outside the Tribunal’s building.

Journalists and broadcasters wishing to cover the event at the Tribunal should email press [at] icty.org by Thursday, 27 June at 17:00. Emails should contain the name of the media outlet, the journalist’s full name, passport number and contact details.
