Mr. Jean-Claude Antonetti Appointed as Permanent Judge to Replace Judge Claude Jorda

As of 1 October 2003, Mr. Jean-Claude Antonetti will serve as Judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Mr. Antonetti was appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations to replace Judge Claude Jorda, who recently resigned to take up his duties as a Judge at the International Criminal Court. Following his making the Solemn Declaration pursuant to Rule 14 of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence, Judge Antonetti will serve the remainder of Judge Jorda’s mandate until 16 November 2005.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

A national from France, Mr. Antonetti was born on 13 July 1942.

Initially a civil servant, he began his career in the judiciary in 1977. Two years later, he joined the Ministry of Justice where he successively was Chef de cabinet du Directeur de l’Administration Pénitentiaire and Chef de Cabinet du Directeur des Affaires Civiles et du Sceau (until 1984). Following his appointment as Legal Adviser on issues of European Economic Cooperation (1984-1986), he became Head of the Communication Department of the Ministry of Justice (1986-1987).

Appointed as Procureur de la République in Senlis (Oise) in 1987, Mr. Jean-Claude Antonetti was between 1991 and 1995, and between 1997 and 1998, Vice-President of the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris. Meanwhile (1995-1997) he became Conseiller Justice of the French Prime Minister.

In April 1998, Mr. Jean-Claude Antonetti became Conseiller Justice of the French President, Mr. Jacques Chirac. He held this position until his appointment in July 2002 as Président de Chambre (presiding Judge) à la Cour d’appel de Paris.

Since September 2002, Mr. Antonetti has also been a member of the Consultative Commission of Human Rights.
